Lazy Locks Care

Lately I have been living this crazy lazy life where I haven't been doing anything to my locks and while I love this freedom, I can't help but feel like I am taking my hair for granted and creating some bad hair habits for myself that will come back to bite me in the butt or in a lock, should I say. I haven't created a bottle of hair oils in like 2 or 3 months and have been relying on an occasion spray of Pink Oil moisturizer hair sheen to oil my locks!! How freaking sad is that. And I say that I love my hair! I've also gone two months without retwisting the back of my hair ever since I did my last latch at the beginning of April which is something that is new to me. For that reason alone I love the latch because while I could use a retightening, it doesn't look anywhere near as fuzzy and unkempt as it would have, had it been palm rolled. But back to my laziness. I'm sitting here trying to figure out what I've been thinking and wondering why I would get so complacent on something that is so important to me and that's where I came up with the idea that I am taking my hair and it's health for granted. Having beautiful healthy locks is a lifetime process and it's not something that I can just put on the back burner and think about every now and then. One of the misconceptions that I had when I began this journey is that I would get to a point where I wouldn't have to do any maintenance on my hair except for my monthly retwist, but as I walked this path I've come to realize thats it's more than that. I'm not complaining about my hair at all, just stating that I didn't necessarily picture the work that came with maintaining my locks even at 3 years but I wouldn't change this decision for anything in the world. I love my locks! Knappy, fuzzy, and all! I just need to get back in the groove of my hair care regime that keeps my hair growing fast, healthy and beautifully. So now I pledge to myself to get to Whole Foods Market this weekend and buy my oils so that I can make me a batch of Knappy Scents and satisfy my hair before it starts to show my negligence and then I will be reall7 sick and it will only be my own fault. Well now that I've digressed let me go and get started.

What started this journey...

My journey started on June 16, 2005 on what will always be known as the worst hair day of my knatural borne life and the day I made the best decision of my life. My 3 year old afro was not acting right and wasn't showing any signs of acting right soon. I brushed, plaited, twisted, oiled, washed, wrapped up and puffed, but all to no avail, when my BSF said the words I'll never forget. "Why don't we just lock up? I mean, you've been talking about it, and if you do it then I'll do it with you." Priceless words. Well, once we decided that we immediately went online, did our research and figured out how we were going to start them and with what product. I started my 4-5in. locks with two strand twist, using ORS lock and twist gel. You can view my journey at http://www.fotki.com/TheCurlyOne/ and see photos from before I started locking up until a few months ago. My regime has stayed pretty consistant over the years and that requires me to do a retwist every 3 to 4 weeks. I'll do a touch up on the front locks if I want to go an extra week without doing a full retwist. I'm currently palmrolling but I am research the nappy locs too to see how latching feels for me. I'd like to latch the back and continue to palm roll the front because I love the coiled retwist look that you don't get from the latch method. I'm coming upon my 3 year lockaversary and I want to do something special to my locks. A straw or roller set using pipe cleaners will probably be the next style that I attempt. I have everything I need I just have to actually sit down and do it.
